“I Zimbra” by Talking Heads [1979]
Random Music History Song of the Day
After two albums of quirky, fun, cerebral music that was hard to classify (was it Punk? New Wave? Is there a difference? Does it matter?), Talking Heads placed their most innovative new track first on their 1979 third album, Fear of Music. Sounding more like Fela Kuti than anything coming out of New York at the time, “I Zimbra” brought pure African rhythms to the New York art-punk scene. The song was released as the second single from the album in early 1980. It failed to make a mark on the pop charts, but managed #28 on Billboard’s Dance Club chart. David Byrne and the band’s producer Brian Eno took the nonsensical lyrics from a Hugo Ball poem called “Gadji beri bimba.”
I always wonder this: of all the influences on New York bands like Liquid Liquid and ESG (funk, dub, the bourgeoning hip-hop scene, etc.), how large was the impact of Talking Heads?
Well, Radiohead got their name from their song Radio Head! :D

I love this! (Not to say I’m this much selfish when it comes to music I like. When I love something so badly I tend to scream about it to the world instead.)

Some great piece of music from the recent past, also my current song on loop because I don’t hear enough of this these days. (not that I am complaining)
Gosh thanks for this Maika :) Have you checked out Varshons? Good (albeit obscure) stuff!
I’m too much with myself, I wanna be someone else
I don’t think I fully realized just how great this album was until this morning. After listening to it full blast, through a pair of headphones (while half asleep, at about 4 am).
Let me try this later in my 6-hour bus ride :)
